Achieving Restorative Sleep


This time of year can leave us feeling frazzled and jittery, tired but unable to sleep. If you need some natural help this winter, consider the following non-drug compounds that can safely enhance sleep and alleviate anxiety:

  • Bioactive milk peptides activate brain cell receptors for neurotransmitters that reduce anxiety, such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine. A glass of warm milk can do the job, or you can purchase the amino acids in capsule form at a health food store.
  • Ashwagandha is a widely used herb known as an adaptogen, a compound that has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and balance the impacts of stress.
  • Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the body's pineal gland to help regulate sleep/wake cycles. 3 mg of melatonin at bedtime has been shown to improve sleep patterns, sleep quality, and duration of sleep.
